Reading and Comprehension

We are the New Zealand Plain Catholics who's turn it is to monitor and answer questions from seekers at the Plain Catholic website. The number one question we get is: "Where are communities of Plain Catholics?" Of course, if they had completely read the webpage they would already know that answer.

Apparently the computer age has brought with it a new malady: shortness of attention. The ability to bounce from one subject to the next on a whim does not promote reading for comprehension or cognitive development. Thinking skills and the digestion of reading material are quickly becoming lost arts. Instead we find that people succumb to the whim of an emotional microsecond that directs the next place the cursor lands.

We would like to encourage everyone to put down the computer and spend at least 30 minutes a day of interrupted reading in Scriptures, the Church Fathers or other spiritually edifying book. After all, honeybees drink long and steadily at a flower filled with life-giving nectar. We too should stay awhile with books that edify us with the nectar of wisdom therein in order to improve the health of our spiritual walk.

Oh and a hint: you can find the answer to the number one query on this webpage. http://plaincatholic.webs.com/whoweare.htm
Cheers and God bless.

I am so overjoyed that now we have moved and given up television, my Jack spends a fair part of the day reading the Bible. We then talk about what he is reading and discussing things. It is something I have longed for for a very long time!
