Tis still in the high 90s here in the mountains; it was rumored this week that the devil bought an air conditioner, tis so hot.
The garden is suffering but nought can be done about it but water. The animals seek shade and shelter with what few breezes can be had. It brings to mind the spiritual desert of which we so often read in the spiritual writings of the ammas and abbas of our faith. So I water down the animal pens to allow the evaporation to cool them; I pray for rain; and we all trudge on with our daily routines.
One habit of Plain Catholics is to read the Bible daily. We arise in the wee hours of 4:30 or 5 am and spend time with Jesus, slowly absorbing His presence both in Word and Prayer. Whether the weather tis hot or not, we are refreshed by the Living Water of our Savior. We move from there to saying the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church's prayer of Scripture and praise, with voices raised, and hearts held high in the hope of our salvation. Tis a wonderful source of strength as we move into the day of chores and volunteering.
We had 3 homebound visitations this week. The elderly are so lonely and hunger for the gentle company of others... and the opportunity to unburden themselves of their long hours of worry and regret to a nonjudgmental ear.
That's me away then with more to do.

Being in Germany, we have only had a few hot days this summer. Now last summer it got in the 100's and there is no a/c in the housing units, so it was quite uncomfortable for the month and a half of unbearable heat. My husband was in Iraq at that time last year so you can only imagine what their summer was like...
It's nice to see another woman getting up at an early hour to spend time with the Lord. My husband's alarm goes off at 5:25 a.m. Monday - Friday and so once he leaves for work, I usually stay up the rest of the day. I pray and do my Bible readings throughout the whole day as new prayer requests come up and such.
What a blessing to help the elderly. I would like to do that myself. It's difficult though, as an American being in Germany, not knowing the language, I would be useless to the elderly here. And Germans are very private and proud people, they don't ask for help, it's rather weird.
Plus, not everyone here likes the fact that Americans live in their country. I think they still hold the Hitler / Nazi mentality, some of the older Germans I mean...
Oh well.
I do penpalling with older ladies though and that's a blessing.
Penpalling is a ministry all it's own. :)

Indeed, penpals are an important ministry. Think of all those lonely mailboxes that are filled with letters from someone who cares enough to relieve the loneliness.
I love the Liturgy of the Hours. I learned about it while visiting nuns - I'm a convert, so I didn't grow up in the Church. For my wedding I splurged on the 4-volume set and I bought that "Divine Office for Dodos" book as well! I haven't had a lot of time to read it but that's what cold dark winters are for haha!
