One of the blessings and curses of retirement is the luxury of time. All of those projects, skills and agendas we pledged to pursue in our retirement now come back to haunt us. Catalog companies cunningly bombard us in the dark winter months with their wares, knowing that we have the time to peruse their products.
Which seeds for the garden?
Do we want to raise this breed of chicken or that?
That catalog of lovely embroidery blank linens is so tempting.
Should I get that quilting frame or get that super duper mega-mixer that kneads 10 loaves of dough all at once!
What about that blacksmithing course; of course we will need that $900 anvil...YIKES! Property taxes have to be paid so that awaits another time.
So much time, so little money; or as we often say, "Too many rabbits to chase."
I decide to build the quilt frame myself from the husband's scrap lumber. There is nothing wrong with my wee mixer ... so I toss out those tempting catalogs with the super duper mega-mixers, quilt frames, embroidery, and crafts. I keep the seed catalogs, bee catalogs and the chicken catalogs with the rationale that these will provide items which will save us money on eggs, produce, and the all important honey and beeswax.
As for the blacksmithing: well the husband shall have to wait to indulge on that perhaps another year unless he can find an anvil at a yard sale on the cheap. In the meantime, there is that old section of railroad rail he uses for small tasks....
Once again, we turn our backs on materialistic temptations and pledge ourselves to living simply, plainly and of course, in budget.
That's me away then.
Living our faith in plain and humble service to Jesus, Our Lord and Savior ... ORA ET LABORA +++ Sentire cum Ecclesia (to think and to feel with the Church)
Rejoice in hope; endure in affliction; persevere in prayer. Romans 12:12
Prayer joined to sacrifice constitutes the most powerful force in human history.
St. John Paul II
I have a mustard seed; and I am not afraid to use it. (Habeo granum sinapis quod uti non timeo)
Pope Benedict XVI
But I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a direct war, a direct killing, direct murder by the mother herself."
St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

But we do dream don't we? I know I do!
