My "Training" Regimen

With the Olympics dawning and the new emphasis on fitness I thought I would share my own athletic training regimen. (All times are approximate as the duties of the day will vary).

5 am: Get up, get tea, read the Scriptures and pray the Morning Liturgy of the Hours.

5:45 am: Get a wee bite for breakfast

6:45 am: First load of laundry. While that is soaking, go out to the gardens and weed, dig and plant.

7: 45 am Wash and rinse clothing. Hang up to dry.

8: 40 am Feed the animals; check their water (by this time the pedometer has already register 3023 steps) Walk the 3 dogs 2 miles (no mean feat, that. 'Hyper' is an understatement and I also get an upper body workout holding them in check on the leash).

10 am: go to town to pick up the mail and run any errands needed.

Noon: Tuck in for lunch; say midday prayer. Read the mail, pay any bills and write correspondence. Wash breakfast and lunch dishes. Once a week I check my hives during the heat of the day when most of the bees are out and about.

2:30 pm: Peel any veg for the supper. Yard work such as mowing, trimming, flower maintenance. Housework such as dusting, mopping, sweeping. Check email. Start the supper. Do the Evening prayers of the LOH about 5 pm.

6 pm: Eat supper. Do dishes and clean kitchen. Animals check. Bathe, do Night prayers. Bed at 8 or 9 depending.

The pedometer the doctor had me wear one week showed anywhere from 19,000 steps to 22,000 steps for a typical day. What that means in miles I do not know. My activities vary by the day but I average that many steps per day.

My weight lifting routine includes hefting 50 lb-bags of feed for the animals. Hanging up heavy sheets and blankets to dry; picking up bee supers at approximately 40 lbs each. Moving hogwire bundles that weigh 45-60 lbs to put up fencing. Using the sledge hammer to pound fence stakes into the ground. Washing 7- 10 lbs of fabric by hand, hanging it to dry; then taking it down to cut into clothing or other projects. Using a 4 lb hedge trimmer for an hour at a time to trim bushes. Then in winter months, I am out with pruners, ax and saw helping the husband clear more of the land of trees and brush. At harvest I am picking, digging, prepping and canning fruit and veg; before and after canning, the kitchen needs a thorough scrub down.

Now you understand why I laughed when a friend invited me to her exercise class!

That’s me away then.

I have often thought it funny people going to the gym to work out. I myself would rather work out doing my every day chores! You surely work a lot harder than I do though. I actually miss being able to go hard at it all day long. My poor body can not do it any more!

Aye, indeed; tis God's grace I can still do it after 6 decades. Praise God in His Infinite Mercy.
