How I am going to get off cheap... again.

In our home, we pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Tis a wonderful way to pray one's way through the Scriptures. The books are the size of a small Bible and very thick which has made it difficult to find a suitable cover to protect these prayer books when we travel. Time and again when finding a cover that would fit and provide waterproof protection, the cost would be quite prohibitive.

Well today in our Wally World I spotted some vinyl and some pack cloth in the fabric section (aye, we have one of the few blessed Walmarts with a fabric department still). Doing an internet search, I was able to find a free pattern for making a zipped book cover with handles at this link.

So guess what this old thrifty lady is going to do...you guessed it, make her own. They have several colors of the vinyl and of the pack cloth (which resembles the cordura with a laminated water-proof backing). I may get ambitious and make a different color cover for each of the 4 volumes using my old treadle sewing machine as it has the metal gears needed to handle such a heavy material.

Thought I would share this with those of you who have hard to fit Bibles and breviaries. That's me away to make the templates for my new breviary covers.

I say good for you making your own. It will surely be a lot nicer than one you could buy!

I hope you post pictures of the finished product!

I shall try to find a way to get the pictures taken of the finished product. At the present my dependence upon a younger, more tech savvy cohort is complete :-)

I have been trying to pray the LOTH for about a year now, on and off.
Do you have any advice as to how to learn how to "do it" correctly?
Thanks so much. God bless you

Tis a discipline to be sure; set a regular time and let nothing interfere with that time. Do get the current guide for the year 2008; the numbers of the pages helps tremendously.

If it is still too intimidating, perhaps starting off with the shorter version called Christian Prayer will help. The Office is made up Psalms, Readings and Prayers. On special days, the Readings and Prayers will change but the Psalms remain the same (unless tis Easter or other Great Feast.)

Once you are comfortable with the Christian Prayer, then you can move onto the 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours with more confidence. God bless you for the trying of it.

I understand your frustration I went thru the same thing until I found a small Bible cover that fits the LOTH. It was Black until I bought some tapestry ribbon and "perked it up."

I have also graduated from the CP to the LOTH. It was easier to learn than I thought. The guide makes all the difference.
