A New Wrinkle On An Old Idea

The dawdy haus is a smaller home for the parents of adult children located next to the primary residence in Amish society. It is there a couple can spend their "silver years" near their children and their grandchildren without losing a sense of dignity or independence, maintaining close family ties without being "too close". Relationships are important to us all.

A new wrinkle on the dawdy haus is the MEDCottage. The idea for this high-tech cottage for the elderly came to a Methodist pastor who was touched by the plight of his elderly parishioners forced to move to a nursing facility. The cottage can be easily moved into the backyard of a primary residence and has some amenities that the traditional dawdy haus does not: monitoring systems and other accommodations to help the senior resident function more independently. Ports for medical equipment and other needs are built into the structure.

Faith in Action: tis a beautiful result.
That's me away then.

I want nothing more then to have a dawdy haus or just a one-room extention on our house so that we can have my mother-in-law live here rather then a nursing home! (She's not needing that yet, but when it does happen that she's too old to be alone...)

how strange, when we built our house 4 years ago, we built a room in the garage that my mother lives in, it has the same floor plan!! I didn't even know there was such a thing

That's a beautiful idea. I hope we can use it for my family if we ever need it.
